Handgevlochten abaca
De abacaplant is een bananensoort die bekend staat om haar uitzonderlijk sterke en flexibele vezels.
De abaca wordt daarom door de Verenigde Naties zelfs de ‘Future Fibre’ genoemd. Het oogsten en verwerken van deze grondstof is een arbeidsintensieve klus. Na de bloei wordt de abaca gekapt waarna de steel in repen wordt gesneden. Deze worden geschraapt om de pulp te verwijderen. Na het wassen en drogen, worden traditionele technieken gebruikt om de vezels te vlechten of met de hand te weven tot mooie duurzame items.
